Cheers to Potential...

Red Belly Black - 2005 Chardonnay

So everyone is very excited over the recent changes in government. And well they should be. After what has been arguably the most maligned tenure of a president we all deserve a little hope. My gripe is not with those that eagerly anticipate what's to come. My problem is with those who think that now that we have Obama in power, everything is magically going to be okay.

Allow me to make an analogy. In sports, teams often get excited over the top draft pick. This goes double if the draft pick is a "#1". Obama, without question, is a #1 draft pick talent. Problem is, there is no such thing as a 'sure thing' in sports (just ask Sam Bowie). The same can be said for politics. For everything that has been said about Obama's potential, nothing has happened yet. Everyone needs to remember that.

That's not true! I saw Obama walk on water!

No, you're confusing him with Jesus. Don't feel bad. Many people have done this recently.

I don't hold a grudge towards those who are ecstatic about our new president. I'll even forgive those who cried over it, as long a you were born before 1970. The point is, the man hasn't done anything yet.

Personally, this was my first year being able to vote. Yes, I voted for Obama. Am I glad he won? Sure. Do I wish him the best? Absolutely. Am I ready to put his face up on Mt. Rushmore? No fucking way. What we did is give him the chance to live up to the hype. He may do it, he may screw up. Yet, for some reason, people are already willing to give this guy 4 more years. Relax. Let's see how it goes.

It was especially funny for me to see Jesse Jackson crying over Obama's election. Trust me, he's not crying out of happiness. The man has made a living out of the martyrdom of African Americans. "You're second class citizens!" "You will never achieve greatness as long as the white man has control." Whoops! Turns out Jesse was wrong. Now he has very little (if any) foundation to stand on. He's crying because his time in the spotlight is over.

An important thing to remember is that things will not change in a week. Nor a month. Nor a year. The situation the USA currently finds itself in is one that will take years to rectify. Sadly, I don't think people realize this. Remember, many citizens of the USA are ignorant (sad but true). I have a weird feeling that many expect this thing to turn around by June. Not gonna happen.

But I heard Obama healed leppers.

No. Again, that was Jesus. Check your facts.

Okay, but I definitely know Obama died for our sins.

Dammit! You're confusing things again. Here, check out my cheat sheet and see if it helps:

Turned water into wine - Jesus

Was the senator of Ilinois - Obama

Was the son of God - Jesus

Was the son of a Kenyan - Obama

Befriended Mary Magdalene - Jesus

Befriended Joe Bidden - Obama

Went to Occidental College - Obama (although Jesus did study there during a semester abroad)

Look, the point is I'm glad people are happy about the new new president of the USA. I love that everyone is so passionate about their new commander and chief. I just ask you to hold back judgement a little bit. Let's see how his tenure goes, then decide on his place in history.

There's no question Obama has hall of fame talent, but it'll take me at least four years before I let him into Cooperstown.
